How to create an AutoCAD linetype

Create a custom text linetype and download a .LIN definition for AutoCAD. The export uses the Standard text style in your drawing.

  1. Set the pattern

Enter your repeating text and a linetype name. Adjust text size, repeat spacing, and clearance using the live preview.

  2. Download and load

Download the .LIN file to your CAD library folder. In AutoCAD, use LINETYPE → Load → File, select the file, and load your named linetype. Assign it to a line or layer.

  3. Adjust the scale

Select a line and change Linetype scale in Properties to resize its pattern. LTSCALE changes the scale globally. Run REGENALL and check the result in your drawing layout.

Preview assumptions

The export is a native AutoCAD text linetype using the built-in STANDARD text style. Its base dimensions follow the imperial built-in text-linetype convention. It loads and behaves like other LIN definitions.

Text size and repeat spacing are design proportions. At 100%, the base text height is 0.1 and the target repeat interval is 0.9 drawing units. Longer labels receive extra space automatically. The preview is illustrative, with no promised printed size or drawing distance.

CAD uses the font and settings of Standard in your drawing. The preview assumes the selected preview font, style height 0, width factor 1 and oblique angle 0. Browser font measurements and endpoint alignment are approximate. Polyline behavior also depends on Linetype Generation.

Export syntax and pattern geometry have been checked programmatically. A desktop AutoCAD import has not been verified.
